My mcfee virus protection wont detect any viruses i got before downlaoding the protection?

i forgot to renew my mcfee internet protection program so it stopped working, when i relized i had started to get viruses i renewed it amediatly. Now i have protection but i cant get those old viruses off my computer...PLEASE HELP ME!!!
