Does deleting viruses by sending them to the recycle bin work?

The computer I'm using at work has a crappy free virus protection program that can scan the computer, but can't delete high profile viruses and such unless we upgrade to pro or register or something....

But, since the scan tells me exactly what file is the virus (i.e. documentsand settings\front desk\temporary internet files\.. etc.) is it effective for me to simply find the file and send it to the recycle bin, or does that method not work?

yes
Many viruses will actually re-install themselves if you simply delete the executable file. You need a real anti-virus. Download AVG Anti-Virus from download.com. It updates itself daily, runs in memory to give you real time protection, scans your system, and deleted viruses FREE OF CHARGE. Check it out here; http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-F... 50 million users can't be wrong! While you're there, download Spybot S%26D too. It'll scan for and remove adware and spyware. (I'm an IT manager for a non-profit org, we use it, and it's great!)
Most of malware today is trojans, worms, adware.

The term ''virus'' is really being misused.

Suggest you use Super Antispyware Free and run an online scan with Bit Defender. You may have a problem downloading and installing SAS unless you have admin privileges. It is the best antispyware program today.

Download and Install Super Antispyware free. Reboot into Safe mode and Run SAS. Allow it to quarantine whatever it finds.

Run the online scan for Bit Defender in normal mode. Allow it to quarantine whatever it finds.
