Are viruses living or not? (not computer viruses)?

Some scientists say that viruses are not 鈥榓live鈥?because of how they reproduce. Would you say a virus was living or not?

why?

A virus is not living as it dosen't follow the accronim MRS.GREN

That stands for:

Movement (dosen't move)

Reproduction (dosen't Reproduce)

Scense (dosen't feel anything)

Grow (dosen't grow)

Respire (dosen't breath)

Excrete (dosen't poo)

Nutrition (dosen't require nutrition.)

i agree with thunerp..
virus shows living qulities %26 also unliving qulities
If they are....what a godawful boring life it must be eh;) But no..I would classify the reproduction as the main characteristic of living...
There are some basic qualities which are used to 'define' life in an elementary sense:

excretion

reproduction

respiration

locomotion

nutrition

sensitivity to outside stimuli

growth

Viruses don't do most of those things - even reproduction only happens with the help of the host organism - so by this definition, they wouldn't be considered alive.
