Imac viruses / norton's security?

One reason why i bought an imac was i was told there are no viruses for imac, now i read in my 3 new books and they suggest norton's virus software if i download from the internet.

So is it a good idea to get the protection?

Do macs get viruses?

Stay far, far, far away from Norton or Symantec products. They'll do more harm than good for your Mac. I suggest you download and install ClamXav if you really want an AV.

Macs running MacOS X do not ''get'' viruses, malware, or adware. If you disable the pop up ad blocker in Safari, you can get some pop up ads. That being said, you can send a virus to your window friends. If someone sends you an email, and it has a virus, you could forward that virus on to someone with a windows computer. The virus can't hurt the Mac. Nortons etc. would like you to buy their anti-virus program so you won't pass a virus on, but the virus won't affect your Mac. I have had Macs since they came out, I have never had a virus or passed one on. I did tech support for 10 years for a school district, I never had a Mac running MacOs X get a virus.
