Can viruses and spyware slow down your computer?

I am just about to buy Avast Virus protector. When i remove them viruses will my computer speed up again? Cause my internet downloads and explorer are extremly slow and i have 8 meg broadband.

Removing a virus will speed up your computer. Also clean out your temporary internet files, temp files, history, cookies,and do a DEFRAG. I would also scan for spyware, they slow you down more than viruses do.

Normal maintance will keep you running faster.
