Computer Viruses/Trojans, where do they reside?

at on a computer? I have rebuilt my computer and it is still acting funny, I was wondering where viruses stay at when you fdisk the computer and reinstall operating system? I know they can be left over in memory but where else? Keeps shutting virus removal tool down and cannot remove or figure out what virus it is, there is also malware and spyware cookies that I remove that come back. Any kind of help I can get here is greatly appreciated.

What you can do that helps are these steps:

1. debug, fdisk, and format the harddrive: a good deal of trojans and viruses reside in the MBR(master boot record) and that's the first thing that gets accessed when windows boots up. If you need the debug script click here ====%26gt; http://support.dell.com/support/topics/g...

After that, then use fdisk, then format it then reinstall it.

After windows is reinstalled, you can do one of 2 things you can install your drivers and antivirus and head directly to the microsoft website, to get the windows updates. Or....

You can do this (I must warn you that there's considerable more work involved.) Get the all the security releases and critical update image files(January 2006-February2007) from microsoft. (I'll tell you now there's a bunch of 'em, up to a dozen .ISO files) and install them manually. You can either burn them to CDs or use something like alcohol, magic disc, or the VCDrom tool to create virtual drives to mount the images to install the updates. The advantages of doing this is that you're not using an internet connection to make you vulnerable to attacks, and you're able to fully update your system. The downside is that you would spent a great deal of time having not only to download the updates, but to install them as well. Hopefully you'll be able to do what you're comfortable with. One final thing is to make sue that your anti-spyware, and antivirus is always up to date.
